The Ladies 1XV host a difficult match for their first home game of the season

The scoreline flattered the opposition on the day
- Sam Stabler, Head Coach

Report by Sharnie Pokai

It was a great day for rugby and the weather cleared for a great kick off between Hampstead and Sutton & Epsom for the first home game of the season.

An early kick from Caz Bolton put pressure on Sutton and Epsom in the deep right pocket, however the opposition were quick to respond, shifting it out right and running the length of the field, putting the first points of the board.

Another great kick kept Sutton and Epsom near their tryline forcing them to clear it out from the boot, but this was quickly swept up by Hampstead's wings Rachel Berry and Violette Desarmeaux.

A penalty to the visitors saw them tap and go to storm up the tryline with their fullback scoring soon after.

Our forwards got us close to the white paint a few times with some great drives and solid scrumming, unfortunately the home team weren’t able to execute and, as the heavens opened up for a short spell, some ball handling errors were prominent across the pitch.

Despite some great defensive sets, Sutton and Epsom got another opportunity getting the ball over the line out wide.

Hampstead were then quick to respond with some solid work out of the ruck by scrum half Mel Wright which saw flanker Jamie Blazejewski charge around the blindside, offloading to Rachel Berry who placed it nicely between the sticks.

Shortly after a line out for Sutton and Epsom allowed a solid run through the middle and saw them touch down once again just before half time.

The second half saw some fresh legs kick off in the sun again.

Some great defensive pressure from skipper Faye Hamp saw a steal for Hampstead followed by a great line out and quick pass to Cecil Peker who charged it up the pitch.

The prop followed with another solid run out the back soon after as well.

A turnover in our own 22 saw a strong drive up the pitch with the forwards mauling close to the line giving Hampstead flanker Geraldine McGroarty the opportunity to go over for 5 with Caroline Bolton securing a conversion.

This point-scoring pair were awarded forward and back of the match respectively for their efforts.

Some great contests throughout the second half saw the visitors' fullback go over for another try.

There was an almost immediate reply from winger Louise Martin which wing saw Hampstead in a great position just 10 metres from the tryline.

Unfortunately Sutton and Epsom brought too much magic and, after a penalty in their favour, their fullback go over for a hat trick just before full time.

Hampstead head coach Sam Stabler said: "The scoreline flattered the opposition on the day. We spent long periods in their 22 but our execution let us down on the day.

"Looking ahead to the Medway game, there are tweaks to make in training but we fully expect to challenge on all fronts on the 17th."

Final score: Hampstead 12 - 41 Sutton & Epsom
